What would you do if you witnessed a horrifying accident unfold before your eyes? Would you be too shocked or afraid to help out? For David Fredericksen, of Mississippi, he didn’t think much before rushing to a burning car to help because of his “love for people.”

That horrifying car crash happened a few years ago on Aug. 11, 2014. Trucker David Fredericksen was driving along the I-10 Freeway in Gulfport when he saw a car T-bone with an 18-wheeler, crashing into the truck’s gas tank and exploding into massive flames.

Time to go home for a couple days

Anyone would have been terrified seeing such a raging blaze. Fredericksen, however, didn’t hesitate to save the victims. According to ABC News, after stopping his truck, Fredericksen asked his co-driver, Walter Letterman: “You want me to go out there and see if I can get him out of the car?”

“No, what are you gonna do?” Letterman responded. Fredericksen said: “I got a fire extinguisher.”

With that, Fredericksen grabbed the extinguisher and ran to the burning car and saw a 51-year-old grandmother and her 1-year-old granddaughter trapped inside.

Letterman and some other drivers also got out of their cars to help in the rescue after seeing Fredericksen’s heroic actions.

“We noticed there was a lady in the front, kicking the front seat—the door, trying to get out, and when we opened the door I noticed a 1-year-old little girl in the back seat. She was pretty happy when I grabbed her out of there,” Fredericksen said.

Fredericksen pulled the toddler out, then Letterman grabbed her in his arms. “She was the cutest little thing, too. She was hugging him so tight she was choking him,” Fredericksen said, Jalopnik reported.

“We got them both away from the car, and it just went up in flames,” Letterman told ABC News.

What was left after the raging inferno was only charred metal of the vehicles. Amazingly, everyone survived, including Scott Swanson, the driver of the 18-wheeler, who made his escape without sustaining any serious injury. The baby girl had only minor injuries, while her grandmother suffered a broken leg.

“I don’t know how we all made it through that,” a tearful Swanson said. The authorities had said that Fredericksen had saved the day.

“I don’t feel it’s heroic,” Fredericksen explained. “Really what I feel is when I first got out of the truck, I was praying that they wouldn’t be dead. I just wanted to put the fire out, but when I saw they were alive, I was like “SWEET!”

As to what motivated him to get out of the truck to save the victims, even though he was putting his life in danger in such a hazardous situation, Fredericksen said: “When you see something like this, you have no other choice.”

“I trusted in God when I went there. It could’ve blown up and killed me. He’s got a plan for me, because after I got back to the truck my hands were shaking. My actions were because of my love for God and love for people. Because it does make a difference,” he said, according to Jalopnik.

“I’m just glad that they didn’t die, you know?” he added.

The whole rescue process was caught on Fredericksen’s dash cam and was uploaded to YouTube. In the description, his son wrote: “Thankfully my father had the presence of mind, bravery, and forethought of carrying a fire extinguisher, to be the first person on scene to risk his own life in order to possibly save another and to inspire others and lead them into taking action. Everyone involved in the rescue effort is a hero in my books.”

He continued: “The police and fire department responded within minutes of the accident and also deserve praise.”

The consequences would be unthinkable if not for the bravery, selflessness, and quick thinking of Fredericksen. Hats off to this heroic truck driver!
