A New York City police officer was convicted Tuesday of plotting to kidnap, murder, and eat women, after jurors were forced to delve into often sordid subject matter to deliver the guilty verdict.

The lawyers for Officer Gilberto Valle, who was called the “Cannibal Cop” by tabloids, argued that he had “weird proclivities” and was just fantasizing, reported The Associated Press.

Prosecutor Hadassa Waxman, however, said that he “left the world of fantasy and entered the world of reality,” because he had come up with plots to carry out “horrific acts on young women.”

Valle’s defense also said his postings and e-mails were simply “fantasy role-play” and “dark improv theater,” reported CNN.

He faces life in prison for conspiracy to kidnap. He was also convicted of illegally accessing a federal law enforcement database to reach potential victims, the network reported.

Valle never killed or ate anyone, but a document titled “Abducting and Cooking Kimberly—A Blueprint,” was found on his wife’s laptop, referring to Kimberly Sauer.

U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara hailed Valle’s unanimous conviction.

Valle made “detailed and specific plans to abduct women for the purpose of committing grotesque crimes,” he said in a statement. “The Internet is a forum for the free exchange of ideas, but it does not confer immunity for plotting crimes and taking steps to carry out those crimes,” he added.

Valle will now face a sentencing hearing at a later time.
