WASHINGTON—Melanie Joly is meeting U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken in her first stateside visit as Canada’s new foreign affairs minister.
The meeting comes one week before Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sits down with President Joe Biden and Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador at the White House.
Joly is in D.C. to discuss making progress on the shared agenda Canada and the U.S. established in February shortly after the presidential inauguration.
Since then, Biden’s domestic agenda has taken a decidedly protectionist turn, alarming political and economic observers north of the border.
Joly’s main goal will be to emphasize the importance of the two countries working together to strengthen supply chains and spur North America’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
She is also taking part in a discussion with stakeholders about how Canada and the U.S. can work together to advance democratic values and human rights around the world.
