It’s true that there are people in new relationships that instantly develop a dislike for each other’s ex-boyfriends or ex-girlfriends. But one woman, of Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, knew this is not how she should behave. On her wedding day, she had a special message to share with her son’s biological mother.

When Katie Musser met Jeremy Wade in April 2013, she didn’t know about his past until six weeks later when he told her about his 3-week-old son, named Landon. She was shocked but pretended to be excited for him.

Jeremy changed after having Landon, and from then on, “there was a constant battle and fight” between her and Jeremy, Katie wrote in a Facebook post.

“Landon’s mom (Casey) and I hated each other,” Katie recalled. “So many stories, rumors, and judgements, but what would you expect? That’s all we ever saw. That’s the norm. You don’t like the ‘other person.’”

Then one day, Katie decided to change. “Right before Landon’s first birthday, I reached out to Casey. I spoke nothing, but truth to her,” Katie wrote. The two women started going on mommy dates and got to know one another better.

Through it all, there was Landon in the center; he was “the one thing we had in common.”

Later, Casey married a man named Tyler. Tyler and Jeremy did not get along, but the two couples still managed to raise Landon as co-parents.

Four years had passed, and on Sept. 23, 2017, it was Katie and Jeremy’s turn to tie the knot.

On her wedding day, Katie knew she wanted to include Jeremy’s ex-girlfriend, Casey, and his young son, Landon, to show everyone that the four of them are “one family.”

So, during her wedding vows, Katie unexpectedly turned to Casey and said: “First I want to thank you for accepting me as your friend and allowing me to be a part of Landon’s life.”

The bride made promises to Casey, saying: “I promise to be an amazing mother to your son. I will guide, teach and love him every single day.”

“I promise to respect, work, listen and communicate together as co-parents. I love you guys no matter what comes our way. We are one family, always,” she added.

When Casey heard Katie’s heartfelt vows, she began to cry.

“No one knew that it was happening, not even Jeremy. Casey cried the entire time. It hit her hard,” Katie told InsideEdition.
“I was completely blindsided in the most wonderful way,” said Casey in an interview with ABC News. “Looking back, it doesn’t surprise me because that’s the kind of pure person Katie is. She wants everyone to know that you can do this. It can be easy and you can love the co-parent of your child.”

That’s not all. Katie then bent down to Landon, then 4, and read him her vows.

“I promise to stand by you, listen to you and love you every day,” Katie said to Landon. “I promise to love Daddy with all my heart. I promise to be a best friend to your mommy and your daddy Tyler. We will be one big family that I promise you will have for the rest of your life.”

Katie’s touching vows left many guests at the ceremony in tears. The video capturing this emotional moment has also gone viral.

As for Jeremy and Tyler, they buried the hatchet on the day of the wedding too.

Katie hopes that her video will inspire others. “I wanted others to see that it is possible co-parent [sic] regardless of the situation,” she said.
Whilst Casey told People: “I want people to understand that there is hurt and there is pain in split-parenting, but if you do what’s best for the child, you will be happier in the long run.”
It wasn’t easy for Katie to say her vows to Casey. “I was struggling for the longest time with my vows in general,” Katie said. Hence, her courage to declare her promises directly to Casey and Landon is admirable.

The two couples are a great example of how putting aside differences, resentment, and hatred can make for a more enriching life, especially if a child is involved. Remember, love and compassion can melt steel.
