Erwin had appeared in over 250 television shows and films, including I Love Lucy, Maverick, The Andy Griffith Show, Growing Pains, The Twilight Zone, The Golden Girls, and Star Trek: The Next Generation.

The Texas-born star was recognized for his work on Seinfeld, which aired on NBC from 1989 to 1998. He received an Emmy nomination in 1993 for his role as Sid Fields.

Erwin started his acting career at the Pasadena Playhouse in 1940, and then spent a few years at the Laguna Beach Playhouse and La Jolla Playhouse, according to the Los Angeles Times.
