Betty White is voted the Entertainer of the Year 2010 by Associated Press members, announced the news organization on Monday, Dec. 20.

After working in Hollywood for more than six decades, the 88-year-old actress became unexpectedly popular on Facebook recently in a campaign for her to guest host Saturday Night Live.

“It’s ridiculous,” White told the AP of the recognition in an interview from her Los Angeles home. “They haven’t caught on to me, and I hope they never do.”

White’s 2010 started with a lifetime achievement award from the Screen Actors Guild in January, reminding the public of her talent to mix comedy with warm charm in shows such as The Golden Girls and The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

After appearing in her award-winning Snickers Super Bowl advertisement, more than 500,000 supported her on the Facebook campaign.

She rose even higher in people’s hearts when she finally hosted Saturday Night Live on Mother’s Day weekend in May, watched by 12.1 million viewers, one of the show’s biggest audiences in years. The appearance won White her seventh Emmy Award, for outstanding guest actress in a comedy series.

In 2010, White appeared in many other shows, including Lopez Tonight, the Ellen Degeneres Show, the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, the Oprah Winfrey Show, Hot in Cleveland, Pound Puppies, and in Operation Secret Santa as the voice of Mrs. Claus.

“What Betty White did in 2010 doesn’t usually happen,” the AP reported. “But more than acclaim, her unlikely, age-defying success resonated deeply with people who saw in her a spirited, hilarious aberration, a woman not dimmed by age but enhanced by it: The genuine article in a pop culture awash in imitators.”

The AP collected 102 ballots from U.S. news organizations in its membership. Voters cast their ballot for the person who most influenced entertainment culture in 2010. White’s 20 votes beat the cast of Glee, Fox’s hit musical, by only two votes. Previous winners include Taylor Swift, Tina Fey and Stephen Colbert.

After an astounding 2010, White already has a successful 2011 in sight. She will star with Jennifer Love Hewitt in The Lost Valentine, the 241st Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation, to air on Jan. 30 on CBS, according to a release by the television network.
