Just minutes after a trial against Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi opened on Wednesday, the case was adjourned until the end of May.

Berlusconi is on trial for allegedly having sex with an under-age prostitute, 17-year-old Karima El Mahroug, nicknamed Ruby the Heart Stealer.

The 74-year-old prime minister is also accused of misusing his power to release the Moroccan-born dancer after she was in police custody for alleged jewelery theft. Neither Berlusconi nor Mahroug appeared in court.

The trial is expected to take many months, if not years, due to legal challenges. The prosecution has filed 20,000 pages of evidence, and has called for 132 people to appear as witnesses. Berlusconi has named 78 witnesses, including Hollywood star George Clooney.

Berlusconi is presently also on trial in three other court cases over allegations of corruption and bribing a witness.
