ABINGTON, Mass.—Authorities say an 11-year-old boy has been shot in the face with a handgun by another boy inside a Massachusetts home.

The Enterprise reports it happened just before 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at a home in Abington, about 20 miles southeast of Boston.

Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz says the victim was taken to a hospital, where he’s listed in stable condition. His name has not been released.

Authorities believe the shooting was an accident.

It’s not known whether there were any adults in the home at the time.

No further information was immediately available.

Cruz described it as “a shooting as pertaining to two young boys,” adding that the weapon was a handgun, the Boston Globe reported.

“Obviously our thoughts and prayers go out to [the victim] and his family,” Cruz added. “We’re hopeful that he’ll recover,” he said.

He did not provide more details about the shooting.  Neither of the children were identified.

“I saw the kid in the ambulance and he was just covered with blood in the face,” neighbor  Beverly McAuliffe told CBS Boston. “They were playing together. I don’t know what they were doing or how they got the gun.”
