FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.—Bill Norkunas, an attorney, and Barbara Pink attended the first of Shen Yun’s 2013 Florida performances at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ Au-Rene Theatre Jan. 11.

“I saw it last year,” Mr. Norkunas said. “It was so special that I had to come back. I was in Boston two weeks ago, and they were advertising it at the kiosks. ... I was the best advertisement because I … had seen it.”

He said it’s nice when you can convey the impact of the performance, but nothing compares to seeing Shen Yun: “I am the best advertiser you have in Broward County!” He said he had come to town just to see Shen Yun again.

“Wonderful!” was Ms. Pink’s first word about the performance. She said it made her feel light and serene.

“It’s special,” she said of the backdrops, which create colorful animated settings that are perfectly synchronized with the music, dance, and stories. The digital backdrops depict a range of striking scenes: heavenly paradises, lush forests, Mongolian plains, and tropical beaches, to name a few.

Speaking of the female dancers, Mr. Norkunas said, “The ladies just all have a nice look on their faces, and they’re so talented and athletic.”

“There’s a serenity that’s attached to [Shen Yun], that comes across. It’s calming. I would come again,” he said.

Ms. Pink replied, “I'll tell you, Bill, you can take me again! How’s that?”

Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company is performing at the Broward Center through Sunday, Jan. 13. Its next venue will be the Bob Carr Centre in Orlando, with three evening performances, Jan. 15–17.
