Amazon boat 13 dead: A crowded boat capsized at the mouth of the Amazon River in Brazil early on Friday, leaving 13 people dead.

Reuters reported that authorities are searching for the sunken boat as around a dozen people went missing after it capsized.

Rescuers were able to pick up around 46 surivors.

“We don’t know how many people are missing because the captain doesn’t know how many were on board,” rescue operation leader Sargent Orivaldo Santos told Reuters.

The boat only had capacity for 25 people but authorities think that more than 60 were on board.

“The boat had more than 70 people aboard,” Colonel Carlos Alberto Moreira Reis told AFP.

The ship was traveling from Chaves on Marajo island to the port city of Belem in a journey that was expected to take around 10 hours.

Six divers, two helicopters, and a ship are partaking in the rescue effort.

Reuters reported that the passengers were going to a market in Belem to sell fruit and shrimp, and to pick up supplies.
