Thurston Moore - Demolished Thoughts (Matador)

It seems that while Thurston Moore’s default setting is most definitely still art-rock, he has hidden depths in the sphere of acoustic songwriting too. Opening with the beautiful ‘Benediction’ the veteran alt legend’s third solo album isn’t without moments of spikiness, such as on ‘Circulation’, but for the most part it is a blissful record, backed by apt string arrangements. It feels like an album that wasn’t intended to stretch its audience or its author but that’s not always a bad thing, and rather than a vanity project Moore’s accomplishment makes this a worthy diversion from his Sonic Youth day job.
