What’s the key to keeping the love alive in a long-distance relationship?

For Senior Airman Antwaun Snipe, who is currently serving in South Korea’s Kunsan Air Base, it’s communication and dedication.

Snipe communicated with his girlfriend of 4.5 years—Dommonique Salley, of Goose Creek, South Carolina—through calls, text messages, and FaceTime.

Besides that, Salley would “pray in the mornings for my days to ensure I had a good week.”

“The consistency as a whole made our relationship stronger, because I knew I could count on her for support,” Snipe said, according to dvidshub.net.

Spending 11 months away from home, Snipe’s heart pined for Salley.

Realizing Salley was the one, he submitted an application to the American Red Cross to surprise her with a proposal during the 50th Anniversary of the U.S. Open Tennis Championships, which would be broadcasted on the Today Show.

“I was thinking about it for a long time, and had an idea of what I wanted to do,” Snipe said. “Then a friend of mine shared an American Red Cross opportunity that I liked even better, and one I knew my girlfriend would love.”

Snipe was chosen, and he secretly flew to New York to carry out the plan.

On Sept. 3, Salley attended the U.S. Open’s 7th Annual Military Appreciation Day, thinking she was invited to the event to represent Snipe for a special video honoring veterans for their service.

But when Salley was watching footage featuring Snipe on the big screen at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flourish Meadows, New York, Snipe secretly crept up behind her.

Salley felt a tap on the shoulder. As she turned to see Snipe, dressed in his blue military uniform, she was caught off guard big time!

“Wasn’t Snipe in South Korea?” she thought.

Snipe got down on one knee with a ring box in his hands.

Dumbfounded with astonishment and surprise, Salley covered her mouth in disbelief.

“The very words that came out of my mouth were, ‘How did you get here?’” Salley, an emergency room administrator at Trident Medical Center, recalled to The Berkeley Independent.

I thought to myself. How can I be a blessing during this special time? Shouting out the girls that got me all the way…

Snipe pinned his heart on his sleeve during the romantic proposal that was caught on camera.

Salley said “yes,” and Snipe slipped the diamond ring on her finger.

The couple hugged, and the onlookers applauded.

Presently, the couple is living “worlds apart” as Snipe returned to South Korea.

“It won’t be easy, but you have to be faithful to the commitment that you’ve decided to make. And as cliché as it might sound, have integrity. It’ll keep you doing the right things, even if no one else is watching,” Snipe said.

“Our spirituality is what’s brought us together, and what’s kept us together,” Salley said.

The sweet couple will reunite again on June 29, 2019—their wedding day—to recite their eternal promises of love.

Snipe and Salley are certainly a match made in heaven! Wishing them a harmonious union forever and always.
