Military homecomings can be an emotional experience, especially for Perez Mayda, of Portland, Maine, who hadn’t seen her son, Angel Santiago, for a long time.
Serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, Santiago has been away from his family in Maine for four years.
With such a prolonged absence, you can imagine how thrilled Mayda would be when she is reunited with her Marine son, and that’s exactly what happened to her on Sept. 3, 2018.
On that Monday, Mayda was puzzled when a police cruiser pulled up outside her house. The police officer approached Mayda and wanted to speak with her.
Mayda was confused until a familiar person hopped out of the car—her son Santiago! Mayda was completely taken aback.
Santiago was hiding inside the cruiser all along, and he sought help from the Portland police to make this surprise reunion possible.
Mayda shrieked in disbelief and joy, putting her hands to her face. Santiago then gave his mother a tight and long embrace.
As expected, the mother was over the moon to see her son.
“I was confused when the whole thing was happening, but the joy took over after I saw my son,” Mayda told News Center Maine.
This emotional homecoming was caught on film and uploaded to Facebook by Santiago.
“Thanks To The Local Maine Police For Making My Surprise Home[coming] Amazing [sic]!!” Santiago wrote.

In another instance, a wife, after looking at all the surprise homecoming videos, wanted to create a special moment for her little daughter, Aria, and husband, Brian, who had joined the military. They had been away from each other for a while.
Thus, when the day of Brian’s homecoming arrived, they came to know that he wouldn’t be home for five more days, and that broke little Aria’s heart. She didn’t leave her room the entire day.
But when the day finally arrived, both Trinity and Aria were among the other families and loved ones who ran across a field to hug their returning soldiers. Aria threw her signboard and ran into his arms.
Homecomings like these are truly special.
Seeing these homecomings reminds us all to be thankful of our brave military personnel for their service since they make sacrifices in the time away from their family to serve the common good.
