VANCOUVER, British Columbia—Shen Yun Performing Arts took the stage at Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver Monday night in the sixth of a seven-show run. The company’s unique style gained many new fans, among them a Vancouver-based ad agency president.

“It’s lovely,” said Mr. Cribbs, the head of a marketing and branding company that works with major consumer brands like Nike and Kellogg’s.

He said he thoroughly enjoyed the music and dancing in the show.

Shen Yun features Chinese classical dance, vocal performances, and a live symphony orchestra. There are also ethnic dances,  folk dances, and demanding aerial techniques that were borrowed from Chinese dance and incorporated into modern gymnastics.

“Its great. It’s new to me. I hadn’t seen it before, so it’s all new. It’s a good education in Chinese culture and Chinese history, so it’s lovely that it’s put to both music and dance,” he said.

The Shen Yun orchestra is unique in that it combines Eastern and Western instruments into its regular repertoire. It’s a sound Mr. Cribbs found intriguing. He said that he wanted to see what the orchestra looked like up close.

“They had such a beautiful sound.”

Shen Yun will play two more show in Vancouver and then travel to Calgary, Edmonton, and Regina to complete the western leg of its Canadian tour.
