Aaron Alexis, a 34-year-old Texas man who was identified as the suspect in the Washington Navy Yard shooting, was a Navy reservist from 2007 to 2011. He won two medals for the Navy.

He left the Navy on Jan. 31, 2011 and was a petty officer 3rd class, reported The Associated Press

AP said it is unclear why he left, but the Wall Street Journal reported that he was discharged for a firearms arrest in 2010.

It was reported that he was arrested after his gun discharged in his home and shot through the ceiling.

He was working for the fleet logistics support squadron No. 46, in Fort Worth, Texas. The Navy told AP his home of record was New York City.

He was among the 13 people killed during the rampage on Monday.

Washington D.C.-area broadcaster WUSA-9 reported that he won two medals while he was a reservist.
