A New, Different Kind of Restaurant List: The Good Food 100

It’s a different kind of restaurant list, not based on a personal critic’s taste, the preferences of a jury, or a user-based platform like Yelp. Rather, the ratings for the Good Food 100 Restaurants List are focused on sustainable practices, highlighting restaurants that are positively contributing to food systems.

The list is released by Denver, Colorado-based nonprofit Good Food Media Network. There are 88 restaurants on the list (some with multiple locations), from 25 states. “In the future, we hope to have hundreds, if not thousands, of restaurants take the survey,” said Sara Brito, co-founder and president of Good Food Media Network, in a phone interview.

The survey results dispelled the notion that only fine dining establishments can afford good, sustainable food. “To me, it’s great that a fast-casual restaurant like Tender Greens can achieve the highest rating, same as Gramercy Tavern or Lucques,” said Brito. “You just have to be a restaurant that cares.” Tender Greens, a chef-driven, seasonal restaurant with more than 20 locations in California, will be opening its first outpost in New York City this winter.

One of the challenges that restaurants face is finding distributors that can make sustainable food easily accessible at different price points.

“Not every chef is going to drive himself to the farmers’ market every week,” she said. It makes distribution companies such as Baldor, in the northeast U.S., or Growers Organic, in Colorado, all the more important. “Sometimes people think if the chef isn’t doing it physically, somehow they’re not doing it right. We feel strongly we shouldn’t let perfection or idealism get in the way of progress. Sometimes doing things good enough is good for right now, because it’s a step in the right direction.”

The list is available at GoodFood100Restaurants.org and can be searched by state, establishment category, or rating. Restaurants may also display a window decal.

The Good Food 100 Restaurants List relies on self-reported annual data of food purchasing, which is independently verified by NSF Responsible Sourcing. The 2018 survey, open to all restaurants and food service establishments, will be available on Jan. 1, 2018.

The Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado–Boulder will conduct an economic assessment to measure the dollar impact locally, regionally, and nationally, of each restaurant’s purchases, to be released this summer.
