A Heart of Gold: Boy Blows Holiday Fund to Buy Bicycle for Gas Station Attendant

February 14, 2019 Updated: February 14, 2019

There aren’t too many kids in this world who think of others before themselves. It’s a glorious facet of youth that you are allowed to learn, play, have fun, and delay the heavier responsibility of the welfare of others until you’ve fully grown up.

But every now and again, a unique child displays a kindness beyond their years. One such child is young South African boy Vaughn Fish, who made someone’s day with a surprising act of generosity.

It’s the little things that count. But little things can sometimes have a far-reaching impact.

Vaughn and his mother, Mandy, pulled up to a Caltex Gillitts gas station and were served by a friendly attendant. Vaughn was feeling unwell that day, and the station attendant worked wonders in cheering him up. The pair laughed and joked, and seemed to form an immediate connection.

Mandy commented in a Facebook post that the interaction had singularly succeeded in lifting her son’s poor mood. “We regularly visit the station and Vaughn eagerly looks out for his new friend,” Mandy wrote.

The station attendant, Tony, had made a huge impression.

Mandy, with her son in tow, were in the practice of transporting bicycles to and from Giba Gorge Mountain Bike Park. Little did they know at the time, but Tony was on the hunt for an affordable bike for his commute to work. Finding out what they did, Tony asked the mom and son to look out for a decent, cheap set of wheels on his behalf.

Tony’s need for a bicycle that would dramatically improve his daily life affected the sensitive young Vaughn.

Vaughn had been “collecting silver money from around the house” for months, Mandy reported. Vaughn wanted to treat himself and his mom to a much-deserved holiday. But after hearing of Tony’s need for a bicycle, the boy took a moment to reassess his priorities.

Above all things I regard kindness of heart, and over the years I've tried to live like that and teach my child to do…

“One night he came to me and asked if I really wanted a holiday and upon asking why he said he would rather put his savings towards helping Tony get his bike,” Mandy posted. Her son had been so touched by Tony’s warm reception and wonderful sense of humor that he decided he wanted to help his new friend get the bicycle he so desperately needed.

Mandy, bursting with pride for her son’s unexpected generosity, agreed.

And Tony, of course, was completely taken aback and overwhelmed with gratitude.

Vaughn is a one-in-a-million kid with a heart of gold.

“It will be years until your mom allows you on Facebook,” Mandy wrote, wryly, “but when you do see this post, know that today of all your days on this planet so far my heart is the fullest and most proud of you it’s ever been.”

Vaughn’s gesture has inspired a number of people to jump on the bandwagon; Game Stores gifted both Vaughn and Tony with vouchers matching the value of their bicycles. And the Caltex Gillitts gas station staff themselves, after learning about employee Tony’s wonderful experience, have offered to fund Vaughn and Mandy’s postponed holiday.
