SYDNEY—Nicola, a former ballerina, works as a visual merchandiser for Myers, one of Australia’s leading chain stores that deal in men and women’s fashion labels and designer home ware. So when she laid eyes on Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company’s debut at Sydney’s iconic Capitol Theatre on Feb. 8, she was unexpectedly smitten.

“I wish I could be in the costume department with this company,” she said, stunned by the colourful and exhilarating world’s premier of classical Chinese dance and music.

Shen Yun, based in New York, is dedicated to reviving ancient China’s true traditional values, desecrated under communism.

Heroic legends, ethnic and folk traditions, and contemporary issues are brought to life from the opening curtain to its closing, from serious moments to light-hearted moments sprinkled with humour.

Nicola was amazed by the combined use of colours that matched high-tech animated digital backdrops, and fabrics designed to move with the dancers movements, “a great production,” Nicola said. “It was stunning. I like the visuals, the colours, the fabrics, and all the props as well,” she said.

“The props that the women danced with were beautiful and all the fabric that they throw around in their arms and their hats, and the [plum] blossom dance was stunning, absolutely gorgeous. I haven’t seen anything that pretty in my life--so much pink!”

The Plum Blossom dance Nicola found so captivating shows the resilience of these delicate flowers looking even more beautiful as the blossoms withstand even the harshest of winter snows.

“That was beautiful. The way that they used those fans was just stunning. It was so gorgeous and I also like the mischievous monks, [Little Mischievous Monks]. That was really good too. I liked the humour.”

Nicola, from a child danced for about 13 years of ballet. She was really impressed with the dancers.

“I know from my dance experience that it is a lot harder to dance slowly and with control, than quickly,” she said. “They have so much control over their bodies, so athletic and so strong. Particularly impressive were the women how they use all the fabric and the scarves. I know that can be really difficult so I was very impressed.”

In summing up the entire show, Nicola said she “was very impressed and blown away. The precision and the absolute dedication that they all showed to every single performance, there were no weak moments. It was beautiful.”
