Chopsticks are versatile and simple tools for eating, but there are certain etiquette to keep in mind when using them. One commonly known rule is to not leave your chopsticks sticking up vertically in your rice bowl. In countries such as Japan, this is considered taboo as it reminds people of funerals, where a bowl of rice is left with two chopsticks standing up vertically.

Here are eight more chopsticks rules that should be kept in mind.

  1. Do not point chopsticks are others when resting them on table
  2. Do not use chopsticks to dig for a particular piece of food
  3. Do not point at others with chopsticks in hand
  4. Do not stretch out the index or middle finger while using chopsticks
  5. Do not lick on suck on tips of chopsticks
  6. Do not receive food with your chopsticks. Instead, offer your bowl
  7. Do not tap your bowl or table with chopsticks
  8. Do not drop your chopsticks onto the floor
