75-Year-Old Great-Grandmother Graduates from College in Alabama
In an extraordinary feat of perseverance, a 75-year-old Alabama great-grandmother graduated from college on Friday, May 11, inspiring her granddaughters to continue their own education.
“I didn’t miss a day of college. Not one day. No matter how sick I was,” says 75-year-old Annie Watts in the video.
The road to her associate degree was challenging, including a bout with cancer.
“It felt great, like I accomplished something,” Watts said.
The woman went back to school to inspire her granddaughters to complete college.
“There were times I wanted to throw in the towel,” the woman’s granddaughter, Nyleen Patterson says in the video.
“But I talked to her and what she was going through. And it kept me motivated and kept me going and so I graduated with honors.”
When her name was called during the graduation ceremony, the hall at Drake State Community and Technical College filled with roaring applause.
“I think we’ve looked forward to this day more than she has,” Patterson said, according to WHNT.
Watts said she would like to tutor those who need her help.
