6 Emotional Signs That Indicate You Are Mentally Drained, and How to Deal With Them

Are you worn out? Has everything just become a real grind?  Do you have trouble sleeping, feel anxious, or are depressed most of the time? If this picture fits you, it sounds as though you need to take stock of yourself and give yourself a break. Things always seem a bit easier after you become mentally and physically refreshed.

Suffering from stress for a long period of time can lead to mental exhaustion; in other words, you feel burnt out.

Constantly dealing with stressful situations increases cortisol levels in the body; this can then interfere with the body’s normal processes, and symptoms of disease may appear. You may have become physically exhausted as well.

Here are six emotional signs that fatigue may be overwhelming you.

1. A feeling of hopelessness

If you feel hopeless, it doesn’t mean there is no hope for you; it just means that is how you feel. This could be a sign of melancholic depression.

2. Anxiety

Everyone feels anxious at some point, perhaps you are starting a new job or your child is taking a big exam. But these feelings come and go in our lives. If you are constantly anxious, it may be that you have an anxiety disorder and need help.

3. Depression

Depression is a common disorder that can have an effect on many facets of your life—your thinking, how you feel and act.

4. Anger

Suddenly, you find yourself irritated at the slightest thing, and people notice the changes in you.

5. No motivation

Usually, you have no trouble keeping motivated, but lately, you feel as though you just can’t be bothered.

6. Feelings of worthlessness

Everyone’s life is worth something, but if you have severe depression, you may not think this way.

Physical signs of exhaustion might also manifest themselves as headaches, changes in weight, chronic fatigue, digestive complaints, insomnia, and poor immunity. Changes in behavior can also occur, such as becoming withdrawn, your work performance might not be up to par, and you might find yourself taking more sick days.

There are many triggers for mental exhaustion, and these are different for everyone. Some common ones include childbirth, death of a loved one, being a caregiver, money issues, chronic illness, becoming overworked, or even too much pressure at the office.

There are many coping mechanisms you can put in place to ease your burden, depending on the situation. If you can remove yourself from the stressful situation that would be ideal, but that is not always possible. Seek some outside help, enlist the help of a babysitter if you can’t cope with home duties, work and taking care of the family. A cleaner can help take the load off too if you are finding it hard to do the chores. Seek professional help if you are struggling to find some answers, and in the meantime take a walk in your lunch break, or have lunch in the park, away from the office.

Exercise is a great way to feel good about yourself again, and increase exercise time as you start to feel more motivated. Moderate exercise is good to help you cope better with stress. If you can book a holiday, that will give you something to look forward to. Even making small changes in your life will help ease your burdens, and if you are not sleeping enough, try to get some good-quality sleep.
