NEW YORK—Forty-one people were shot during the unusually violent Labor Day weekend, with at least three fatalities. The shootings occurred in separate incidents and all across New York City. The shootings began around 6 a.m. Saturday.
The fatally shot victims included a 30-year-old man found in Flatbush, 24-year-old Donavan Dallison of Crown Heights, and 18-year-old Tyrief Gary.
Several children were injured in shootings in the Bronx, including 11-year-old Shaquan Walters, who was shot in the leg on Sunday morning. A 14-year-old girl was shot in the back, and a 13-year-old girl was shot in the left thigh. Police are looking for suspect Oneil Dasilva of Mount Vernon in connection with shootings in the Bronx, but have not made any arrests yet.
Two people were injured at the West Indian Day Parade held in Brooklyn on Monday. The parade has been the scene of fatal shootings in past years as well.
Mayor Bloomberg described the shootings as “unconscionable,” and urged the federal government to pass stricter gun legislation.
“There are just too many guns on the streets, and we have to do something about it,” said Bloomberg. “We cannot continue to have these guns in the hands of kids who don’t understand the value of life.”
