4 Gross Things That Happen to Your Body If You Don’t Shower for Just 2 Days

July 22, 2019 Updated: July 23, 2019

While showering today is one of the most common morning activities for people around the world, it wasn’t so long ago that most people didn’t have the luxury.

Today, however, we often worry about what will happen if we miss even one shower. The answer is not much, other than that you might feel a little scuzzy until your next one. But if you miss several showers in a row, some pretty terrifying things can happen! Today, we’ll look at four of the things that go on when you don’t clean your whole body regularly.

1. Your hair will get greasy

While many people don’t wash their hair every day, as washing too often with harsh shampoos can strip the natural oils and leave your dry and brittle, there’s definitely a happy medium to be found. When your scalp gets dry, your sebaceous glands produce more oils to compensate. As Lynn Goldberg told Business Insider: “It’s paradoxical, but people who wash their hair a lot to get rid of oil are drying out their scalp and producing more oil.”

However, the risks of not washing your hair often enough are grim to say the least. If you have normal or oily hair to begin with, not washing it and not shampooing it can lead to a buildup that leaves the hair matted and greasy. Not a great look and definitely not a great feeling. So while it’s fine to skip shampoo or washing once in a while, you don’t want to make it a habit!

2. Your body odor will increase

We don’t just shower to stay clean and healthy. We also do it because the human body, and the skin in particular, is teeming with bacteria (over 1,000 types in all), some good and some bad. While most people think that sweating is the primary cause of body odor, in fact it’s caused by the bacteria that are consuming fatty acids and proteins on your skin.

When these bacteria process this stuff, they let out gases, and that in turn leads to the particular funk that we get when we don’t shower often enough. In addition to being gross in and of itself, body odor can have big consequences, from alienating your colleagues at work to even causing a rift with your spouse!

3. You will be more likely to get breakouts and blemishes

Not only can your hair and body suffer from neglecting your cleaning routine but your skin can also have lots of problems. If you have oily skin and are susceptible to breakouts or blemishes, not showering often enough is an invitation for unwanted visitors.

Especially if you’re exercising regularly or living in a big city, you need to shower after a workout or at the end of the day to get all the gunk off. If you don’t, you could end up with outbreaks of acne or other signs that your skin is irritated and unhappy.

4. You will be more vulnerable to colds and flus

While hand-washing is probably the single most important cleaning ritual you should incorporate into your life since it’s through our hands that we come into contact with most germs and viruses, showering is almost as important for keeping yourself healthy. For anyone who commutes to work, going through subways, trains, buses, and planes can bring you into contact with a shocking variety of diseases.

If you’re trying to stay healthy during cold and flu season, washing your hands frequently and taking regular showers will definitely help you avoid catching the bug that’s going around the office. It will also help protect your kids from colds circulating at school.

Conclusion: Shower regularly if not every day.

If you’re camping, traveling, or simply have had a crazy day and happen to miss one shower, that’s okay! But to go without showering for a long time opens you up to a lot of potential problems, not the least of which is smelling and looking pretty bad.
