Last spring, a severely injured 3-month-old puppy was found in Sonora, Mexico, with his jaw and nose blown off, most likely caused by firecrackers. Animal rescue teams contacted Tracy Lystra, who runs the Saving Huey Foundation in California, for help. And while she initially doubted the poor dog’s survival chances, her determined efforts likely saved his life and gave him a second chance.
A good Samaritan found the severely injured pooch in April 2019 and took him to a local vet. Then, Mexican rescue staff contacted Lystra because her shelter specializes in rehabilitating injured and abused dogs. But when she first saw the pictures and the extent of the pup’s injuries, her “first instinct was to have the poor dog put down,” Daily Mail reported. It was then that an acquaintance recommended a local veterinarian, one Dr. Briseno, who was willing to help.
The surgeon stated he was confident he could rebuild the dog’s jaw. So, Lystra agreed to pay for his treatment and began a fundraising effort on the rescue’s Facebook page.
In a heartfelt post about the small, injured puppy, which she dubbed Braveheart, she wrote, “At this point, I can’t even say what kind of dog Braveheart is. All I know that this sweet soul is only 3 months old.”
That’s our boy being featured on Yahoo! I bet the idiots who hurt him will never be featured on anything 😂#savinghueyfoundation#finishingwhatwestarted
She urged people to donate to help cover his medical expenses, and the plea did not go unnoticed. They managed to raise $1,755 from kind benefactors who wanted to see the little puppy survive and recover. The pooch had to undergo four operations and have a prosthetic jaw fitted before he was well enough to finally travel to California.
“A new jaw was made for Braveheart, and he stayed at that practice for two months until he was healthy enough to make the 11-hour drive to us,” Lystra said, per Daily Mail. “Shortly after coming to us he had the tube removed from his nose, and this seemed to alleviate a lot of discomforts.”

In spite of the ordeal he endured, Braveheart retained his inner sparkle. While he is still in need of training and was traumatized, Lystra stated that the puppy “is full of love and that tongue of his is always wet! He is super excited to be around people as well as the other pups.”
It’s uncertain what caused Braveheart’s horrific injuries. But the consensus is that they were caused intentionally by some cruel human. “In Braveheart’s case, his surgeon in Mexico, as well as the hospital staff here in the US, agree that it appears as if he had explosives put in his mouth,” Lystra said, per Daily Mail. “Because of the damage, it is believed that the explosive was more than likely a firecracker.”

The puppy got a new chance at life. And while he’s still undergoing medical treatment, he has so far “made a remarkable recovery.” Braveheart’s story touched the hearts of many through mainstream media and social media. Lystra posted on Facebook that she even had to disable her messaging, as she was overwhelmed with the number of people who wanted to adopt him.
“Once Braveheart is fully healed from his next and hopefully last surgery I will post that we are accepting adoption interest,” she informed them.
