A famed rock formation that has delighted hikers and climbers for years has toppled over.
It stood 30 to 50 feet high and was dubbed ‘The Cobra’ due to it’s snakelike shape and was a popular spot amongst rock climbers because of its approachable height.
The rock was part of the Fishers Towers formation, located in Utah about 20 miles northeast of Moab. This sandstone structure was known as a hoodoo, which is when a rock is tall, skinny, and totem pole-like in shape.
The Cobra was formed through wind and rain, and it is believed that’s what also caused it to collapse. Officials believe it toppled sometime last week when the area was hit with severe storms.
No one reported seeing the structure collapse, and no one was injured. Prior to the storms, there were no signs of weakness or teetering in the rock formation.
It’s been a long withstanding April Fool’s Day tradition in Moab to say The Cobra has fallen. Because of this, many people didn’t believe the news that it actually had.
