Archaeologists digging around the Alamo in San Antonio have located an artifact suspected to be from the 19th century.

According to KERA News, experts believe that the small piece is likely the tip of a sword used by the Mexicans during “the famous 1836 battle or in the construction of the Alamo’s southern wall fortifications in 1835.”

However, archaeologist Sam Nesmith who examined the object thinks the latter scenario is more probable given its markings.  In fact, he believes the sword could have been a tool used to somehow fortify the structure under the command of Mexican General Martín Perfecto de Cos.

The discovery was made during an approximately month-long archaeological project aimed at exploring the Alamo’s south and west walls.
