A 19-year-old college student was killed on Sunday, Jan. 7, after a car crashed into the front of a bar in Maryville, Missouri.

Morgan McCoy from Liberty, Missouri, was inside The Palms bar located on N. Buchanan Street when a vehicle crashed into the building around 12:40 a.m.

McCoy was rushed to an area hospital but later died as a result of her injuries, according to a press release from her university.

The student was a sophomore at Northwest Missouri State University with an elementary education major. She was also a member of the Sigma Kappa sorority. The group said in a Sunday tweet that it was “so hard to believe this is happening.”

The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody, the press release stated.

Nodaway County Prosecuting Attorney, Robert Rice, said in an email to KMA News that they have charged the driver, identified as 21-year-old Alex Allen Catterson of Maryville.

He was charged with first-degree involuntary manslaughter, which is a Class C Felony.

Morgan was hit by a “random drunk driver” as she was walking out the door, according to a GoFundMe page set up to help the family with funeral costs.

The campaign page states that the driver had a blood-alcohol level of .207.

A probable cause statement obtained by KMA News also states that Catterson was under the influence of alcohol when he crashed the vehicle. In Missouri, a driver is drunk when at .08 percent.

The accident is currently under investigation by the Maryville Public Safety and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The GoFundMe page had already passed the campaign goal in just one day, raising $10,840 out of the $10,000 goal, on Jan. 8.

The University is also encouraging students in need of counseling assistance to contact Wellness Services at 660.562.1348, or contact University Police outside of regular business hours at 660.562.1254.
