At least 12 people were killed when security forces loyal to former President Laurent Gbagbo, opened fire on supporters of the Ivory Coast’s president-elect on Monday, the country’s opposition coalition told Bloomberg.
Security forces fired machine guns and launched grenades and deadly rockets into neighborhoods supporting the new president, Alassane Ouattara, according to an Associated Press report.
Ouattara has been internationally recognized as the rightful president-elect, despite the fact that former President Gbagbo refuses to leave office after losing the elections last November.
The violence comes on the same day heads of state of the African Union traveled to the Ivory Coast attempting to solve the escalating political crisis.
According to the U.N., an estimated 300 people have been killed in the violence so far, following the results of the disputed national election.
