TOKYO - U.S. President George W. Bush and Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi agreed on Thursday to work together to have the United Nations agree sanctions against North Korea following its launch of a series of missiles, Kyodo news agency said.

The two leaders spoke by telephone, the report said, citing a Japanese official.

Japan has circulated a U.N. Security Council resolution demanding that nations withhold all funds, material and technology that could be used for North Korea's missile programme.

Russia and China, who have veto power in the council, oppose sanctions.

Defying international warnings, North Korea launched at least six missiles early on Wednesday and a seventh some 12 hours later, officials in Japan and South Korea said.

Japanese foreign ministry officials said they had no information about the telephone conversation.
