My Expectations of Mr. Edward McMillan-Scott

Vice President of the European Parliament Edward McMillan-Scott (L) and Chinese human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng (R) (The Epoch Times)

The Vice-President of the European Parliament, Mr. Edward McMillan-Scott, is a man of sincerity and respectable character. Understanding the basis and the extent of human rights violations in China, which are horrific beyond the western world's imagination, Mr. McMillan-Scott is exposing the tyranny of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) without reservation. This act displays his highly commendable integrity and courage. Through his actions following his visit to China, we are able to clearly see his upright and admirable character.

Mr. McMillan-Scott stayed in China for four days. Our plans to meet with each other were thwarted by the sources of which everyone is well aware. I mean no disrespect to Mr. McMillan-Scott, but I was with Mr. and Mrs. Hu Jia when I learned that our meeting was forced to cancel, and I was very calm upon hearing the news. Frankly speaking, I was not looking forward to discussing the importance of human rights and democratic advancement in China with western politicians, whose decent appearances mask their greed for profit.

During the past thirty years of human rights discussions between the Chinese communist regime and western countries, the Chinese people saw nothing but hypocrisy and pretense from western officials. It seems none of them were able to uphold morality or conscience in the face of profit. This attitude was seen again in the recent Twenty-first Human Rights Dialogue between the CCP and the European Union held on May 25 in Austria.

After hearing the CCP fallaciously claim that, "Human rights in China is currently the best in history," the European Union ridiculously applauded the CCP thugs and stated, "the improvements and achievements in the area of human rights deserve affirmation." The European Union's 21st attempt to muddle through the meeting again proves that western politicians' morality is continually slipping, and that they have already assumed the role of concealing the CCP's tyrannical acts and its breach of human rights.

I rarely applaud any politician or event, for I believe that society today is not the least deficient of such resources. I uttered not a word of gratitude even when the U.S. Congress unanimously passed a resolution (421:0) in support of my deeds. Instead, I published an article criticizing the U.S. Congress and government for deliberately avoiding the most serious infringement on human rights in present human society, the cold-blooded persecution of Falun Gong practitioners launched by the CCP. They misdirected their focus on the problems that I encountered from speaking out for the practitioners being brutally tortured. Thus I feel that their act is not out of supreme humanity and conscience but is again a skillful gesture for obtaining political gain under the pretense of morality. Some people in China accuse me of being arrogant. I, however, disagree with their comments, for we should never approve or even encourage western politicians to utilize their political tricks amidst such horrific circumstances as the CCP's rampant suppression of Chinese people's basic human rights and freedom.

Mr. McMillan-Scott is only one who met with the persecuted Falun Gong practitioners and spoke personally with people who know the bloody truth of the CCP's persecution of Falun Gong. He also investigated the situations of those living in the bottom strata of the society under the CCP's barbarous control, and met with those whose human rights have been severely violated.

Western politicians have underestimated the intelligence of the Chinese people. Any dignified Chinese citizen who has clearly realized that western politicians and the CCP have been making a game out of the Human Rights Dialogue for nearly thirty years, and that western politicians will continue to invite the regime abhorred by 1.3 billion Chinese people to such games even after the CCP's nature to commit evil while making fine speeches has been revealed, will slight the worth of meetings with western politicians to discuss human rights situations in China. This has become a common sense for more and more Chinese people.

Mr. McMillan-Scott's action in China and his frank comments after leaving China, however, changed this common dynamic. Mr. McMillan-Scott is unique among all the western politicians, and he did something that we see done for the first time in many years.

As the Vice-President of the enormous, transnational European Parliament, as a South Asian specialist and an internationally renowned politician, Mr. McMillan-Scott is the first and only one among the high-ranking official visitors who met with the persecuted Falun Gong practitioners and spoke personally with people who know the bloody truth of the CCP's persecution of Falun Gong. He also personally investigated the situations of those living in the bottom strata of the society under the CCP's barbarous control, and met with those whose human rights have been severely violated.

Even more admirable, Mr. McMillan-Scott's high-raking position did not become an obstacle for him to learn the truth — this is unlike what we commonly observe. The respectable Mr. McMillan-Scott spoke frankly to the international community about what he saw, and commented in a straight forward manner on the inhumane and immoral nature of the CCP's tyranny. This is new to people's eyes and ears, and the name Edward McMillan-Scott has become remembered by countless Chinese overnight.

Edward McMillan-Scott's promotion of Chinese people's freedom and democracy is not limited to his words and actions during his visit in mainland China. This is just the start of what we expect to be his valuable role in helping the Chinese people in achieving freedom and democracy.

Edward McMillan-Scott's promotion of Chinese people's freedom and democracy is not limited to his words and actions during his visit in mainland China. This is just the start of what we expect to be his valuable role in helping the Chinese people in achieving freedom and democracy. His political position, his moral courage, his clear understanding of the evil nature of the communist dictatorship, and his rare frankness among politicians — all of this leads to our expectation of his valuable role.

In today's China, just about everyone knows the evil and horrific nature of the communist dictatorship. But most people dare not to face up and tell the truth, nor do they have the courage to stop the CCP's crime. This group, fearful of dictatorship, also includes Chinese who are working within the political system, such as Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao.

Another, still larger, group that is clearly cognizant of the evil nature of the communist dictatorship is the western democratic society. The western world knows the history of communism starting from the cold war, during which it saw communism as an evil demon.

Today, western democratic society is still clear about the demon-like evil of communist dictatorship, however, members of this group have almost all become the top guests in the CCP's hall. They have walked alongside the CCP and have become the beneficiary of the CCP's tyrannical rule. They play the game of human right dialogue so as to make themselves feel and look better. They have been shown clearly the CCP's continuing violence, incessant killing and human rights abuses. But they have only been playing the role of an audience.

The inhumane, irrational, and monstrous nature of this Party is known to most western politicians. But these politicians choose to look the other way.

Faced with crimes like the killings during the Tiananmen Square Massacre on June 4, 1989, a massacre under the sun, all they did was to let out angry shouts. Once the shouting stopped, they resumed as top guests in the CCP's tyrannical hall.

The CCP alarmed the world with the June Fourth massacre but has refused to admit its mistakes. It continues to suppress the June Fourth victims' family members using means as terrifying as 17 years ago; it still refuses to stop its brutal persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. The inhumane, irrational, and monstrous nature of this Party is known to most western politicians. But these politicians choose to look the other way. At times, they even perform a stunt like the recent one by the European Union, which confirmed the CCP's "progress and achievements" in the area of human rights.

Edward McMillan-Scott's moral courage can awaken these politicians' conscience and sense of responsibility for humanity's civilization and future, thus effectively dispelling any excuse they may have to look the other way.

In many ways, Edward McMillan-Scott's moral courage can play a very important role. He can use his position to tell the truth face to face to the western politicians who pretend to be innocent. I suggest that he bring with him the various language translations of my three open letters that describe the CCP's brutal persecution of Falun Gong practitioners, and give them to western politicians he meets; he can also give them the documentary material about the CCP's crime of live organ harvesting from Falun Gong practitioners. He can awaken these politicians' conscience and sense of responsibility for humanity's civilization and future, thus effectively dispelling any excuse they may have to look the other way. He works alongside all who endeavor to eradicate the barbarous control of communist dictatorship.
