Dr. Wenyi Wang saw the Columbia Federal District Court postpone a hearing on charges against her for a third time on May 31. Last April 20, Wang became instantly famous when she shouted at Chinese Communist leader Hu Jintao to "stop the killing" at the White House in a live, widely televised and photographed event.
Dr. Wang is charged with "willfully intimidating, coercing, threatening and harassing a foreign official." Her defense says that there was no real threat, and she is requesting that the federal prosecutors unconditionally withdraw the charges against her.
"The charges themselves are groundless. My trying to stop killing and persecution, especially the live organ harvesting (in China), is not a crime, but to protect human dignity and lives. This is what everybody should do," said Dr. Wang.
Dr. Wang also plans to press charges against a Chinese Central TV (CCTV) reporter who was at the scene, who she alleges assaulted her.
"What he did can be seen by everyone. A real reporter would point his recorder and camera at me to collect breaking news. He not only covered my mouth, grabbed my banner, and repeatedly pulled my arms, he also pressed the pressure points on my body, first on the left then on the right. Everyone can see this from the camera," she said.
Video footage taken several U.S. media shows the reporter repeatedly grasping Dr. Wang's shoulder, and attempting to cover her mouth. A Getty photo of the event also shows the CCTV reporter ripping a banner from her hands.
"This is a form of personal attack, so I want to seek justice. In addition, I want to let the world see the act of reporters for the Chinese regime's CCTV," she added.
"They not only serve as the mouth and voice of the Chinese communist regime, they also deprive people's freedom of speech at crucial moments, both in China and overseas. This is why the voices of ordinary people cannot be heard in China."
Dr. Wang is in the process of selecting attorneys to launch her case.
Attorney Terry Marsh, Executive Director of the Human Rights Law Project and a spectator at the hearing, believes that the reason for its repeated delay stems from pressure exerted by the Chinese Communist regime on the US government.
"We all know that all Wang did [to be charged] was to shout. In this case, the law is on Wang's side, and the first amendment of the US constitution is on Wang's side," she said.
Last April 20, Dr. Wang shouted to U.S. President George Bush and Chinese Communist leader Hu Jintao during a highly scripted event at the Whitehouse, drawing attention to allegations of organ harvesting from Falun Gong detainees in China. Wang was at the ceremony as an Epoch Times reporter.
