FLUSHING, New York City—Local residents are calling for the removal of councilmember John Liu and state assemblywoman Ellen Young from office due to their negligence of condemning the violence which has taken place on Main Street, Flushing.
On May 17, Falun Gong practitioners near the Queens Library in Flushing found themselves surrounded by hundreds of pro-communist thugs who tore their banners, verbally and physically attacked them, and threatened them with death. Similar attacks have occurred on a smaller scale for nearly two months.
At least 12 of the attackers have been arrested while the Falun Gong practitioners have quietly endured, not fighting back, according to their beliefs. Both Liu and Young met with the thugs who were arrested yet refused to meet with the victims of the attacks until nearly two months had passed. Falun Gong practitioners later asked Liu and Young to condemn those who were attacking people on the streets, but Liu denied knowledge of the violence while Young repeatedly avoided stating an answer.
Ye Guihua, who had spent three years in a Chinese prison for his pursuit of Chinese democracy, said, "He [Liu] said he doesn't know about the incidents in Flushing. That means he is not a qualified congressman," said Ye. "As an unqualified congressman, citizens have the right to impeach him."
Huang Chengwu who has been living in Flushing for more than 2 years expressed his concern about Liu meeting with those who were arrested for attacking Falun Gong practitioners. Huang also commented on the involvement by the Chinese consulate in the violence. "As a politician, of course he wants to earn supports from every direction, including Chinese consulate," said Huang. "Isn't he making trouble for himself by supporting Communists? If he support Communists he won't be elected again!"
One Flushing resident, a 70 year old woman, Mrs. Liao, emigrated from the northeast province of China over 10 years ago. Liao expressed her opinion that money from the consulate might be a factor: "The Communist Party is skilled at buying and bribing people using money," said Liao. "These two officials are probably bought by the CCP [Chinese Communist Party]. They are both Taiwanese, not even from the social sediment that Chinese Communist Party raises, yet they sold their consciences."
Mr. Shi, a Flushing resident who had reported one of the CCP thugs before said that she was disappointed for having voted for Liu. "I elected a Taiwanese descendent to be our councilman with joy in my heart. Who would have thought that that good boy is bought by the CCP now. I'd say his reputations are totally ruined and their future has no hope. I won't elect him again."
