FLUSHING, New York City輸merica is a melting pot, and that surely showed this July 4th in Flushing, New York. An area with a high immigrant容specially Asian用opulation, the city Flushing teamed with the Flushing Development Center Friday to host an extravagant street fair on Sanford Avenue between Main St. and Union St.

The street fair featured dozens of vendors with various items for sale, food for devouring, and air-filled playhouses for jumping in容ven if they were limited to children. The merchandise certainly had an Oriental ring to it: among the items for sale were Chinese drama DVDs, Asian artwork, and bamboo art. Shish-kebabs and cobs on the corn were served, along with fresh fruit and various desserts.

The bustling and lively atmosphere mirrored the warmth of the midday heat. Most of the street wanderers were Asian, but a sprinkling of non-Asians certainly provided an interestingly exotic addition to the fair.

At one end of the fair, a Western Union booth attracted a moderately large crowd. Children and adults alike lined up in front of the booth to try their luck at a "slots" game. They clicked at the bottom of the screen and if they got, say, three Western Union logos in a row, then they received a prize.

At the other end were two air-filled playhouses, where children could jump around after filling their bellies on street food. After loading up on kebabs, corn, or chocolate, they would burn off all the calories they loaded up on inside the bouncy houses.
