SAN FRANCISCO—San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom celebrated the hard work and dedication of thirteen San Francisco public school educators at City Hall on Thursday at his second annual Teacher of the Month and Principal of the Year Awards.
The ten teachers and three principals were nominated by their students, peers, administrators, and parents and were chosen by quality of the nomination.
San Francisco Unified School District superintendent Carlos Garcia stressed the importance of quality educators. "We can talk about textbooks, anything, but these are the people who motivate the kids," he said.
Mayor Newsom established the annual Thank a Teacher Today Campaign, of which the awards are part, to give praise where praise is due. "Thirty-six months ago, there was nothing positive [about the District] in the papers," Newsom said, adding that it is "top-performing district in California."
Along with the award, the educators received a $500 check from the Mayor's office and a $500 gift certificate for professional development, among other prizes.
