More than 720,000 people around the world have shown their support for persecuted Falun Gong practitioners in China.

The petition is run by the Coalition to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong (CIPFG) and aims to collect 1 million signatures before the Beijing Olympics.

Australia's Million Signatures Campaign coordinator Albert Lin said the public has been very supportive of the petition and readily signed after hearing about the persecution in China.

"Many Chinese Falun Gong practitioners have been killed, tortured and made homeless.

"More shockingly we believe their organs are being harvested by the Chinese Communist Party for commercial gains," he said.

Valdemar Burzan, a cabinetmaker from Eastwood in Sydney, is one of more than 37,000 Australians to sign a petition calling for an end to the persecution of Falun Gong in China.

Mr Burzan said signing the petition and speaking out against the persecution of Falun Gong was a matter of human responsibility.

"I am a supporter of the fact that Falun Gong have the right to do what they are doing," he said.

Sydney woman Agnes Lam volunteers at the Million Signatures petition site in Eastwood, a predominantly Chinese suburb.

She said that China's state-controlled media slander campaign was to blame for the Chinese people's negative attitudes toward Falun Gong.

"I think the western people are more understanding. One lady told me that even though she did not know the details about Falun Gong the persecution is very bad."

Miss Lam said the site in Eastwood was helping to change people's attitudes toward Falun Gong, especially after seeing practitioners demonstrating the standing exercises.

"I think most Chinese people who come here to do shopping think they know Falun Gong but they are too scared to come up and give support. I think they need time," Miss Lam said.

The petition is a worldwide effort to end nine years of brutal persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China.

CIPFG plans to present the Million Signatures petition to the United Nations and various governments before the Beijing Olympics.

Supporters had collected 725,137 signatures from around the world as at June 7. The majority of signatures were from the Asian region (569,036). This figure of course excludes China.
