SAN FRANCISCO, CA—World famous soccer star David Beckham came to San Francisco to unveil the new Emporio Armani Underwear Fall advertising campaign to the public. The event attracted a huge turnout of fans at the city's Union Square on Wednesday.

The handsome athlete—who currently plays for the Los Angeles Galaxy after leaving Spanish giants Real Madrid—has also become a style icon.

"I think it's a smart move to bring any celebrity in this campaign, but bringing Beckham — you'll draw a crowd, and you'll draw attention," said Alta Mirano who works in the San Francisco shopping district.

Beckham has also scored deals with Pepsi and Adidas. In Britain, Selfridges and Co. Department stores witnessed a 50 percent increase in sales of Armani men's briefs after the British press reported Beckham would be the new face of Emporio Armani. Sales of the entire Emporio Armani underwear line rose on average by 30 percent across the range, the store said.

The event was initiated by Macy's Union Square store which has been promoting Emporio Armani undergarments. The first 175 customers to purchase $200 of Armani products were given the opportunity to meet with Beckham and get his autograph.

Beckham was known for being England's leading player for many years. His skill on the field propelled him to become one of the English team Manchester United's biggest draws before switching to Spain team Real Madrid in 2003.

Becky Small, a tourist from England, said, "It's just fantastic to see him, but it's very sad he is not in England anymore, we'd like to see him back in England. So, it's been amazing to be in such a great city and to meet an English icon promoting a major brand for a major shopping outlet."

The footballer took North America by storm in 2007 when he announced his move overseas to join the Los Angeles Galaxy for $250 million.

Beckham is married to former Spice Girl Victoria Adams, also known as "Posh Spice." He recently bought a vineyard in the world famous Napa Valley as a gift to his wife. Beckham is a father of three sons.
