GENEVA—Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brilliant goal and made another as Portugal beat Czech Republic 3-1 to take a big step towards qualifying for the Euro 2008 quarter-finals on Wednesday.
Ronaldo struck in the 63rd minute when he latched on to a square ball from Deco and threaded a fierce low drive through the Czech defence and past keeper Petr Cech to make the score 2-1. He laid on a third for Ricardo Quaresma in the last minute.
Deco had given the Portuguese the lead in the eighth minute but his goal was cancelled out by a neat header from Libor Sionko nine minutes later.
Portugal, who beat Turkey in their opening match, go to the top of Group A on six points, three ahead of the Czechs. Switzerland and Turkey, both without a point so far, meet in Basel later on Wednesday.
