CALGARY—Alberta, Canada is known for its cattle ranches, its rich oil fields, its rip-roaring rodeo called the Calgary Stampede and…its philosophers!

Foster Walker of Calgary, a professed philosopher, attended the Friday night performance of the Chinese Spectacular at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, which did include a performance by chopstick-inspired Mongolian horsemen and drums that called men to battle, both of which Walker said he enjoyed.

"It was quite wonderful. I would have loved it just for the dance and the precision and the choreography. But the spiritual and human rights statement as well was wonderful."

Calgary's philosopher displayed his great breadth of mind by saying, "They [the performances] were all so appealing in their way. I couldn't pick out a favorite, except to say all of them."

Walker saw a deeper message in the show, "truth, forbearance, compassion, awareness" and was very impressed by that he said.

Divine Performing Arts is known for its accurate depiction of true, ancient Chinese culture.

"I was just delighted to see some of the marvelous past of Chinese culture resurrected and put to such effect in the contemporary situation. The beautiful philosophy, the beautiful arts, it's lovely to see them displayed again."

As traditional Chinese culture was one of the casualties of the Cultural Revolution, Walker understood that the Spectacular would not be shown in China but he added, "I think it's a wonderful, different statement to be put forward and contrasted with what's going on in contemporary China, and China of the last 5,000 years. I'm just very happy to see the contrast."

Walker said he was "very happy" to see the revival of traditional Chinese culture.
