SYDNEY, Australia—The opening night performance of the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular at Sydney's Entertainment Centre on April 2 was attended by Bob Vinnicoombe, publicity officer of the One Nation Party.

Mr Vinnicoombe thought the whole show was very good, but his favourite performance was the 'Mongolian Bowl Dance'. "I do a lot of folk dancing. I thought that was very cleverly done," he said.

"I thought it was very clever that they were able to balance those cups on their heads and do all those complicated dances at the same time," he said.

Mr Vinnicoombe continued: "I think this performance of Chinese culture is based on peace, non-aggressiveness, understanding and tolerance. I think it's very appropriate to have this show on at this time. It's a very subtle way of putting across a very important point."

'The show was excellent'

Michael Saurajen from Westpac Bank said the show was excellent. "It's a spectacular performance showing the culture of China. It's giving us a great insight into the beautiful culture, all done through dance. The colours, the performers, the drumming, the singing and the piano are excellent. It's a pleasure to watch."

When asked what his favourite performance was, Mr Saurajen said: "Definitely, the drumming ['Drummers of the Tang Court']…I thought it was very intense. [And} definitely, the opera singing, especially the lady…and the bowls ['Mongolian Bowl Dance'] - very good."

'Completely different'

John Steggles, an accountant, said the Spectacular was 'completely different'.

"It's completely different to the sort of musicals I've been to before. It would help to know the history behind the dancing. I saw part of it there where they were shooting suns out of the sky. And I heard a Chinese lady say next to me that's because there are too many suns. It helped us understand a little bit about it."

"I quite like that drumming ['Drummers of the Tang Court']. That was very impressive."

Mr Steggles went on to say: "There's a spiritual message. Having the words up on the screen made it interesting to read what they were singing about…I've had that sort of spiritual belief as well. It's interesting to see that the Chinese culture runs that sort of belief as well."
