VIENNA—The opening of the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular at Vienna's Stadthalle on Thursday didn't fail to impress the audience, among whom was Andrea Hubeny.

A musician who plays organ in a church and organizes church choirs, Hubeny said she found the music in the Spectacular "something quite interesting, something new."

"It is so completely different than Western music. One's impressions lead one to believe it is gentle, quite elegant. Western music is expressed differently, but I sensed connections. It is a combination of Western and Chinese tonal quality," said Hubeny.

"But the dances are something completely different, not at all like Western ballet and its accompanying music."

She said she especially enjoyed the alto solo by Yang Jiansheng.

"I was enchanted with the contralto voice. It is a voice range seldom heard here. She did a nice presentation. I really liked her performance."

Hubeny added that each artist who sings "gives off his/her own energy…. That is one reason I always persuade even my youngest students to come and listen, and to sing much, because it soothes the soul and enhances people's character."

After another show in Vienna on Friday, the Spectacular will play in Bratislava on Sunday, carrying on to Prague for more shows next week. A total of 35 shows will be seen in 14 European countries.
