Baroness Wilcox was highly impressed with the Shen Yun Chinese Spectacular, saying the show was much better than she'd expected. But she was most surprised that her companion – whom she described as "a big man from the forces" – was equally enchanted by the show.
"I thought he would find it deeply boring -- but he's found it enchanting," she said at the intermission of the opening night in London.
"The wave dance I think particularly was beautiful and of course at the end... all those men and drums. It's beautiful. The time just flew by, just flew by."
The baroness said that the little commentaries between each act helped enormously: "because we know what to expect, we have a description of what's coming".
"It's really interesting. Its beautiful of course – I thought it would be. It's delicate – I thought it would be. It's colourful – I thought it would be. It's no where near as noisy as I thought it would be and there's much more to it in different levels and depths. "
"It's really, really lovely, it's so much better than I thought it would be."
"I felt I was looking at quite a breadth of Chinese culture which was very nice."
"It's lovely to have it presented for me, for me to take what I can of it, I think it's a wonderful thing that it's traveling around doing this -- showing us China.
And the baronesses' favourite moment of the show? "I think I like the men with the drums." she said, chuckling. "Yes, I loved the men with the drums." "And the lotus flower."
"The costumes are beautiful. The costumes really are exquisite. And the actual movements are completely different from our sort of dancing."
