THE HAGUE, Netherlands—As part of its European tour, the Chinese New Year Splendor is in its second day at the World Forum Theater in Holland. Sioe Lan Teng, a dancer herself, says the experience is "mind-blowing" and "reaches your heart."
"It's amazing, it's amazing!" Sioe Lan said. "The dance is just fabulous. I'm a dancer myself, so I was watching their feet. They're so disciplined—this is the discipline that you get from the Chinese or ballet dancers."
"The quality of these dancers—it's just mind-blowing to watch them. I wish that I could speak to one of them. I do ballet myself, but this dance—I want to learn to dance like this," she said.
"And the male dancers are just magnificent," she continued. "It's difficult for male dancers to show emotion through dance because their range is usually more restricted, but this is totally different."
Sioe Lan spoke about what makes these dancers different: "Being a dancer myself, I can see whether someone is dancing from their heart or not, and that's what makes these performances so special. These dancers are dancing with their whole heart, so it touches your heart."
"They are touching the audience—it's all there in the dance," Sioe Lan said. "It's just mind-blowing, mind-blowing."
Sioe Lan also commented on the depth of the music. "Ooh, and the music! This music reaches your heart. The Erhu! Oh my goodness, if the piece had been any longer, I was going to need a towel! The sound is ... different, so different. I had never heard it this way before. Ever since I heard that Erhu performer (on CD) I've wanted to come and see her in a live performance. And now that I've seen her, my goodness, how she can reach you and get all of that out of two strings!"
"It's a shame that the CCP [Chinese Communist Party] has destroyed Chinese culture and tried to insert its own things in its place," Sioe Lan said. "Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance—this is the culture. You should preserve this. Keep it and preserve it. It's the essence of Chinese culture."
"I hope this show comes back," she said." I'll definitely be watching the Web site."
