TOKYO—Chinese democracy activist Wang Dai has applauded Divine Performing Arts for bringing "authentic" traditional Chinese art to the stage.
"Nowadays some people have completely forgotten the original, authentic Chinese culture," he said.
"What's left in their mind is hypocritical and fictitious stuff. The theme presented today is wonderful," he said.
Mr. Wang was at the Asian debut of the Chinese Spectacular in Tokyo on Tuesday night.
"The show represents our culture from the height of Tang Dynasty until today, with a variety of ethnic dances," he said.
"China is a nation with numerous minority groups. The diversity in our culture is reflected in the show," he said.
Mr. Wang is a former fashion model and he studied dancing as a child. His wife, a Peking opera actress, attended the show with him for the second year in a row.
Mr. Wang said the performance was "very refreshing."
"The animation projection on the backdrop is so innovative. It incorporated high-tech [with the performing arts] and made it easy for those who do not understand Chinese culture to learn about Chinese tradition," he said.
Mr. Wang's favorite program was "Lady of the Moon."
"With a first glance you are able to tell the level of the two dancers' skills," he said.
He said the Chinese classical dances with younger female dancers were also "very impressive."
"It was an elegant feast to the eyes. The performance by a group of 24 dancers is really dazzling," he said.
He said the overall production is "very successful in every aspect," particularly the dance performances, and the appearance of the dancers.
"We have a special term for performing arts which is called the 'graceful bearing.' These dancers are very professional in terms of this graceful bearing," he said.
"Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance - the values Falun Gong is advocating - are appropriately and elegantly manifested in the show. It is bound to give a clear presentation to the outside world as to what today's China is like and what Falun Gong is," he said.
Mr. Wang has lived in Japan since 1989, and is a member of the Federation for a Democratic China.
The Spectacular will be showing in Tokyo at Kousei Nenkin Kaikan on Wednesday, and Bunkyo Civic Hall on Friday. For other shows in the Divine Performing Arts world tour, please visit: http://www.DivinePerformingArts.org/ .
