SAN FRANCISCO—Bay Area residents were treated to a variety of Chinese cultural performances brought by the Divine Performing Arts during its four-day tour at the Orpheum Theatre.
With a mission to revive the heart and soul of traditional Chinese culture, the Divine Performing Arts enchants its audiences by transporting them through 5,000 years of Chinese civilization.
Maxine Preuveneers, Sharon Gardner, and Phil read about the show on the newspaper and decided to watch the show together.
Maxine, a retired airlines employee, says that the colors, background, and the music were really inspiring: "It makes me feel like I am going to have good luck in the year 2008!"
Each one of them had their own favorite performance. Maxine enthusiastically said that she liked all of it, saying that some of the pieces make her really think. She continued saying that she was impressed by the messages conveyed in the songs, "...they stick with one another, through thick and thin, through whatever is happening. It is a very good cultural experience for me."
Sharon, a retired teacher, loved the fact that "[the performances] share the history of China, from such a long time ago. They bring it into a modern perspective and make it meaningful."
Phil, a physician, thinks that the "Lady of the Moon" was the best, saying that "it was very well done. The dancers were the best—very pretty, very attractive, and they dance very well."
Jennifer Norman, an employee at a financial services company, liked the "Water Sleeve" dance the most. "I thought it was absolutely beautiful, I've never seen something like that before. The dancing in general was just gorgeous!" Jennifer's husband, Tim, thought the costumes were "fantastic." His favorite piece was "Drummers of the Tang Court."
The Chinese New Year Spectacular will be at the Orpheum Theater for two more shows on Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.
