SAN FRANCISCO—Staying true to its mission, the Chinese New Year Spectacular continued to present true Chinese culture and art to theater-goers in San Francisco's Orpheum Theater.
"I definitely liked the Water Sleeves the most. It was very beautiful—all the colors and to see a different culture and the dancers—they were so well put together—it was very lovely," said Haidee Jezek, a firefighter from Paso Robles.
"Especially the three characters shown, truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance–[they] show a deeper meaning—the earnest and honesty of the Chinese people as a whole," said Jezek.
Jezek said the Spectacular helped her understand Chinese art better.
"I loved the blend of the more contemporary dances," she said.
As an example, Jezek referred to one of the dances where two monks achieved enlightenment at the end.
"There was so much more than they are doing at that moment, so much more to see and understand," she said.
Referring to one of the performances in the show, Jezek, who is originally from what is now-called the Czech Republic, said she could sympathize with those who are oppressed by a communist regime.
"I was shocked when I saw the communist sign, which represents the oppression of the people and now they [the people] want to go back to their tradition, to their ancient beliefs which are kind of confined right now," she said.
"I really can sympathize with that because my family is from the Czech Republic. That used to be of course communist, and is now free. I have relatives that had to go through that [persecution], of course not for that long," she said.
The Spectacular will wrap up its performances in San Francisco on Saturday with two more shows at the Orpheum Theater.
