SAN FRANCISCO—Christine Wilson, a Psychotherapist from Spokane, Washington arrived in San Francisco yesterday to attend a conference. She had looked up cultural events in San Francisco a month ago, and noticed the Chinese New Year Spectacular and purchased tickets right away.
"I like the traditional old dances the best, although the tenor was amazing and it stirs your soul as much as the drumming or the ancient dancing does."
Wilson liked the blend of ancient dances with more contemporary events, although drumming was her favorite performance.
Wilson was intrigued about the performances related to Falun Gong.
"I found that really fascinating, as I went to China this last summer and I saw this repressive regime they were talking about, this [performance] was a treat for me."
"It is very hopeful—it sounds very hopeful!"
"I felt a relief that people got away from that repressive—I considered myself a radical in the late 60s and early 70s, and was kind of naïve and thought that Mao is some kind of great liberator.
"And as I read over the years, especially in preparation for going to China I was stunned how many people died and how repressive he was, so I was really aware of they wrote into the story how people are getting away from that."
Wilson also wants to look up the word forbearance, to get a better understanding of what it means.
It's not too late to attend the Chinese New Year Spectacular. There are performances at San Francisco's Orpheum Theater, at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Jan. 25 and Jan. 26.
It will continue to the Arie Crown Theater in Chicago Jan.25-26. Beginning on Jan. 30, the NTDTV Chinese New Year Splendor will play for 15 shows at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
