The Divine Performing Arts—a high caliber performance company renowned for their revival of China's traditional culture and values—enjoyed their premiere performance at the Detroit Opera House on Tuesday, Jan. 22. A near capacity audience witnessed the company's critically acclaimed Chinese New Year Spectacular .
One audience member, Mr. Paul Speck, a retired writer from Commerce Township, MI, was noticeably taken with the performance. "The dances and movements were all beautiful!" said Speck, who was amazed by the rich and profound traditional Chinese artistry.
In fact, the show even encouraged him to learn more about traditional Chinese culture. "When the ancient Chinese were inventing silk and lovely dances, my ancestors were still painting themselves blue and worshipping trees," quipped Speck.
Aside from the joy in witnessing this ancient artform, there were also segments of the program that caused Speck to reflect on the state of modern China. "I couldn't help thinking about the persecution of Falun Gong in China and the atrocities that the government is doing," he said.
"I'm embarrassed to say that I have forgotten about that, and it's too bad that Falun Gong practitioners were killed for their organs. It also made me wonder about what exactly Falun Gong is and would like to learn more about it."
There are still plenty of opportunities to experience the magic of the Chinese New Year Spectacular. Following this Detroit performance, Diving Performing Arts will play one show in Minneapolis on Jan. 24, and three more in Chicago on Jan. 25 and 26. The Spectacular is also playing January 23-26 in San Francisco. See Bestchineseshows.com for details.
