Two shows are making headlines this weekend in Detroit-the Chinese New Year Spectacular and the North American International Auto Show—and both promise to be a dazzling spectacle for people of all ages.
New transportation innovations are being introduced at the auto show in town until January 27, while the Spectacular transports theatre-goers back in time and to the future through traditional Chinese arts for one amazing evening.
On January 22, the Detroit Opera House—one of Michigan's most prestigious theaters—is premiering the 2008 Chinese New Year Spectacular to more than 2,000 people.
This world-class show draws upon 5,000 years of Chinese history and divinely-inspired culture. Performed by the Divine Performing Arts Company, the show features a critically acclaimed international cast of dancers, singers, and musicians devoted to showcasing authentic traditional Chinese culture.
In the past, people had to travel to Chicago or New York to watch the Spectacular, but this year, Michiganians can enjoy this beautiful performance at their very own Detroit Opera House.
Thanks to the show's sponsor, the Oriental Culture Association (OCA)—a non-profit organization dedicated to bridging the culture gap between East and West through introducing traditional oriental culture and promoting education in American culture and values—the Spectacular can now add the Motor City to its extensive world-wide touring schedule.
Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, Senator Carl Levin and Senator Debbie Stabenow are among 22 public figures that have voiced support for the Spectacular performance.
"… I want to thank the Oriental Culture Association of Michigan for your effort to preserve and promote the Chinese heritage through the celebration of the Chinese New Year. Your contributions to our rich diverse culture landscape are greatly appreciated," wrote Governor Granholm in her greeting letter for this unique production.
"It's very exciting that you are bringing this outstanding production to Michigan. What a great way to celebrate 5,000 years of Chinese culture and the Chinese New Year," said Senator Debbie Stabenow.
The timing for the Spectacular's visit to Motown couldn't be better as several public schools in the Detroit area now have Chinese language programs.
"The members of the State Board of Education encourage the teaching of Chinese history and Mandarin in our schools. We recognize the importance of building ties to your community and China, and appreciate the many contributions that the Oriental Culture Association of Michigan is making to our state," wrote State Board of Education president Kathleen Straus in her greeting letter to the show.
The OCA will be sponsoring more than 70 students from 5 schools to attend the Spectacular. While these selected students are currently learning Chinese in school, the performance will also be narrated in English.
The 2008 Chinese New Year Spectacular will be at the Detroit Opera House on January 22, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. For more information, please visit bestchineseshows.com.
