Currently playing a five-show run at Toronto's Sony Centre for the Performing Arts, the world-renowned Chinese New Year Spectacular continues to delight all who see it. And Saturday's show was no exception.
"Nurturing pretty much sums it up," said Sandy Kaizer, a soon-too-be retiree who attended the Spectacular.
"It is inspirational – it leaves me with the need to process all of the things that were coming at me and — as we all do — make individual discoveries."
The New York-based Divine Performing Arts, the company presenting the Spectacular shows, has been spearheading a renaissance of Chinese traditional culture that has drawn the attention and admiration of audiences around the world.
Kaizer said that she found the performances "fabulous, every one of them was spectacular." The dance company says that in its productions it strives to revive the authentic traditional arts and culture of China in which moral values and spiritual pursuits are highly emphasized. Kaizer said she enjoyed the tenor who performed in the show, that she would study Chinese traditional music if she was younger.
"I think it's a phenomenal discipline – I just think it was fantastic…it's self-discipline, it's inspirational, and it's just amazing." Beyond aesthetic beauty, themes that run through many of the shows' dance and musical pieces include courage, loyalty, honesty, filial piety, compassion, faith, and search for spiritual truth. "What I really loved was that it was not just beautiful and phenomenally done but it made me very aware of how miraculous the human mind and soul are," said Kaizer, adding that she would go to the show again next year.
"I would even go now if I knew there was another show – it was fabulous."
After Toronto, the Spectacular will continue on its world tour, playing in the U.S., Japan, Korea, Paris, Singapore and Australia before heading to Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton in the spring.
