Nuala Donadhy from Oakville, Ontario didn't know that much about Chinese culture when she came to see the Chinese New Year Spectacular at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts on Friday night in Toronto.
What attracted Donadhy, who works in communications, to see the show?
"Curiosity," said Donadhy during an intermission.
The Chinese New Year Spectacular is one of four shows being performed by the Divine Performing Arts Company. An expected 650,000 people will see the performances in over 60 cities around the world.
"I don't know that much about Chinese culture or dancing, but it is just fascinating to watch. The costumes are unbelievable. The movements…they are outstanding. I am loving it! I think it is just great," said Donadhy.
The elegant and expressive costumes seemed to be the highlight of the show for Donadhy.
"The long sleeves were just flowing and beautiful, the materials were beautiful. It was just expressive."
In Donadhy's case, curiosity definitely did not kill the cat.
"I haven't actually seen another show like this. It was quite a different experience."
The performers from the Divine Performing Arts Company show traditional Chinese values and culture through dance performances and re-enacting of ancient tales in a manner that is free of any influence of the ruling communist regime in China.
The Chinese New Year Spectacular will perform two shows on Saturday and two more on Sunday for Toronto audiences.
The Epoch Times is a proud sponsor of the Divine Performing Arts shows that will perform in over 60 cities worldwide in 2008. To find a show near you, please visit www.bestchineseshows.com.
